In 2019, the Surfrider Foundation Europe project team collaborated with the Green Marine team to coordinate the adaptation of Green Marine’s North American environmental certification programme in Europe.
The key actors in this adaptation are a group of European shipping companies and shipping stakeholders, thus creating a mechanism to help them improve their environmental performance on a European scale.
This is an environmental certification programme for the North American shipping industry. It is a voluntary, transparent and inclusive initiative that addresses key environmental issues through its 14 performance indicators. Participants are shipowners, ports, terminals, maritime corporations and shipyards.
To become certified, candidates must annually measure their environmental performance using the programme’s self-assessment guidelines and then submit their results for external certification by an independent verifier accredited by Green Marine Europe, as well as agree to publish their individual results.
