Pesca Miradouro reduces fuel consumption with XBEE

The Sociedade de Pescas Miradouro, SA., a company set up in 1965 and based in Aveiro, is the largest Portuguese fishing company.

The fishery operates a fleet of 22 vessels composed of:

  • 8 trawlers catching fresh fish on the Portuguese coast;
  • 12 shrimp trawlers off the Guinea Bissau and Mozambique coasts; and
  • 2 pelagic factory vessels operating in NAFO, Irminger Sea, Norway, and Svalbard waters.

The company started using XBEE Enzyme Fuel Technology on board two of shrimp trawlers based in Mozambique at the beginning of 2007: M/V Indico and M/V Tropico.

After two years of evaluating XBEE natural fuel treatment, Miradouro’s technical manager decided to extend the use of our technology to all vessels operating in Mozambique waters.

Chief engineers reported the following benefits:
  • Reduced smoke, less gas and particle emissions.
  • Cleaner engines, elimination of carbon deposits.

The number of running hours between two engine maintenance operations, in particular the removal of carbon residues, has been significantly increased: from 7-8,000 hours up to 20-21,000 hours in the case of MAK 6M451AK engines.

  • Cleaner tanks reduced the accumulation of sludge.
  • Reduced consumption of lubricant and filters.
  • Estimated reduction of fuel consumption by -2 to -4%.
